hacked website

A hacked website is every business owner’s worst nightmare. You decide to Google your company name, and underneath the first result is:

  • “This site may harm your computer”
  • “This site may be hacked”

You grit your teeth and go to your home page. There it’s even worse:

  • “This website contains malware”
  • “Reported attack page”

You can already feel your reputation taking a hit. You can already imagine prospective customers quickly closing their browser windows. It’s essential to get your website back up and running as soon as possible.

Do It Yourself Or Use An Expert?

When your website has been hacked, you can try to fix it yourself, or you can get expert help.

If you’re reasonably tech-savvy, you can try to remove the malware yourself. If you decide to go it alone, you’ll need to know how to:

  • Quarantine your site
  • Reaffirm site ownership via Search Console
  • Identify the vulnerability
  • Clean & maintain your site

Otherwise, this is probably a time when you want to call in some outside help. At the end of the article, we’ll explain what to look for in a professional cyber security expert.

How To Remove Malware Yourself

If you think you know how to remove malware yourself, start by quarantining your site. Take it offline, or point your DNS to a static page on a different server (using a 503 code).

Next, you’ll need to log into Search Console and verify your ownership. Once you’ve done this, make sure the hacker didn’t make any unwanted setting changes. If anything is different, change it back to pre-hack settings.

At this stage, you’ll need to clean the site of any malware, including any malicious URLs, plugins or widgets. You may prefer to do this manually or by reinstalling a clean backup.

Finally, make sure you take the necessary steps to ensure it doesn’t happen again. We’ll cover this more in another article, but you can start by choosing strong passwords for all your logins.

(Did you know that a study by the National Cyber Security Centre found that 23.2 million victim accounts worldwide used 123456 as password!)
